Veterinary Assistant | Registered Veterinary Technician

Summary:
The position of Veterinary Assistant/Registered Veterinary Technician for Agwest Vet Group and The ARC is responsible for a wide scope of duties related to providing veterinary services to clients, veterinary care to patients and for the care and upkeep of livestock within the Reproductive Programs.  This job entails assisting veterinarians, working with other staff, direct handling and treatment of animals, administrative work, client communication, facility and equipment maintenance, travel and variable work hours.

Specific Agwest Job Duties:

  • Communications with staff and clients through text, email or phone call
  • Accurate data entry and maintenance of medical records and invoices on farm, in clinic while riding in a truck as a passenger and in the office
  • Run reports
  • Be adaptive with the work schedule and adjust when necessary
  • Work with animals in a veterinary setting maintaining safety and proper animal handling etiquette
  • Assist veterinarian & restrain animals for various veterinary procedures including but not limited to: jog / lunge for lameness exams, radiographs, surgeries, dentistry, vaccination, reproductive procedures, musculoskeletal procedures, emergency procedures
  • Catch and restrain animals of all types and dispositions
  • Herd health support, complete calf care program, transition cow program, selective dry cow therapy and Farm Herd software program including but not limited to: blood collection, dehorning, vaccinations, dairycomp support, ear notch, hormones treatment, ketotesting, elevate testing, milk quality/parlor evaluations, feed sampling/shaker box analysis and on farm supply delivery service,
  • Embryo Transfer (ET)/In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) assistant including but not limited to:  set-up and assist for ovum pick-up (OPU) & dominant follicle reduction (DFR), stock ET trailer, monitor liquid nitrogen, data entry for ET collections and recipient implants, autoclaving ET catheters
  • ET/IVF lab technician and data management
  • Poultry Health Services – duties as required
  • Maintain inventory and cleanliness of Agwest vehicles, clinic and facilities
  • Potentially perform receptionist duties
  • Prepare surgery packs
  • Lab work
  • Launder coveralls, towels and bags on a daily basis.  Check for laundry to be washed and/or dried first thing every morning, at least once midday and once before leaving
  • Before going home for the day, check fridge for AHL lab submissions to go out
  • Admit patients including completing paperwork and getting deposits
  • Discharge hospital patients following doctor’s approval
  • Monitor sick and/or injured animals
  • Communicate findings with other technicians, management and doctors
  • Keep animals groomed, fed, watered and stalls and barns clean with proper bedding at all times
  • Ensure that all hospital areas are stocked and clean, following all disinfecting and cleaning policies and in compliance with clinic standards
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintain function of all equipment; ensure potential deficiencies or repairs needed are brought to the attention of the general manager

Specific ARC/Herdsperson Job Duties:

  • Timely feeding, cleaning and care of donors and recips
  • Monitor animals for sickness, injury and heat detection
  • Shots
  • Data management
  • Maintenance and safe use of equipment and machinery (skid steer, trucks, trailers, blowers etc.)
  • Cleaning the barn and attached rooms/office
  • Work cooperatively with third parties
  • Other farm duties as needed

Job Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to work
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check and motor vehicle record check
  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Able to commit to full time employment with a varied work schedule
